I recently got asked why engagement sessions are important. Why should a couple do an engagement session before the wedding, if they’re not interested in an album or a guest book? I have a very simple answer to that. How comfortable are you in front of a camera? The engagement session is not only a great way to familiarize yourself with working with your photographer, but it helps with the awkwardness of being in front of the camera. Have you had a professional photo shoot before? After your engagement session, the portraits on your wedding day will be a breeze. You already have so many details to take care of that day, the last thing you need to worry about is posing for your pictures. It also gives the photographer a chance to see how you interact with each other, and get an idea of what you’re looking for in terms of photos. The engagement session is when you get to practice your poses, and see what looks good on camera and what doesn’t. Let’s be honest here, you know you’ve looked up pictures on Pinterest that you might want to recreate on your wedding day, and this is your chance to figure out if it’ll work in practice or not. A lot of clients come to me with ideas of stuff they’d like to try, but they don’t realize that most of those pictures are done with professional models, most likely on set, and cannot easily be recreated on the big day. And just because a guest book is not your style, it doesn’t mean that you cannot do other things with your photos. I’ve had clients create life size cardboard cut-outs, or make CD covers for their favorite music mixes as party favors from the photos taken during the engagement session. You can make a collage, or save the date magnets. The most important thing to remember is to have fun. Talk to your photographer about what your expectations are, and just go from there.
This picture was taken at the Heathman Hotel in beautiful downtown Portland. Since it was a cold and rainy day outside, we asked the permission of the hotel to shoot inside, and we had so much fun indoors that day. That’s the other thing to keep in mind, an experienced photographer will know what to do when things don’t go as planned.
