Question Answered! Maui Sunrise Wedding
Paul Rich asked our resident photographers and stalker brides to share their favorite locations for a wedding.
In June, I had the privilege of photographing Stephanie and Josh’s sunrise, beach wedding on Maui, Hawaii. The reason it gets my nod as a favorite location? Well, the obvious is simply that it’s Maui. Second, no passport or work permits are required. But most of all, it’s the intimacy and spirit of Hawaii. No matter who you are or what you believe, everyone feels closer to the Divine in Hawaii. Love is in the air!
Closer to home, I have to agree that Bridal Veil Lakes is one of my personal favorite locations. For winter weddings, nothing beats the Governor Hotel. What’s your favorite wedding location? Great question Paul!
Whether it’s Maui or Multnomah, you pick the destination, I’ll bring the camera!

Let Them Eat Cake!
Wedding cakes are an important part of wedding celebrations. During Roman times it was a thin wheat cake, representing bounty, that was crumbled over the brides head to ensure fertility.
The origins of wedding cakes may be long forgotten, but the ritual of cutting the cake is always a crowd pleaser. Especially when the groom decides to smash the cake in the brides face. To be fair, this doesn’t happen very often, but when it does, it usually wasn’t much of a surprise.
To smash or not to smash? Let your wedding celebration be a reflection of who you are together. Only you can decide what is right for you. Which rituals to honor and even new traditions you create together. Either way, let them eat cake!

In a Sentimental Mood
“On the wings of every kiss drifts a melody so strange and sweet. In this sentimental bliss you make my paradise complete. Rose petals seem to fall. It’s all I could dream to call you mine…”
We had just finished the first look and I was shooting portraits of the groom. Out of the corner of my eye, I saw the bride lost in thought. Present and taking in every moment of her wedding day.
Talk about the timelessness of an image. This is a moment that was simply a fleeting glance. With heart, passion and awareness, this moment was recognized and captured. A touchstone of memory for this bride to remember for the rest of her life. This image stops me every time I look at it.
Invest in your memories by hiring a professional wedding photographer.

Classic Cool
There is nothing more classically cool than a pair of Chuck Taylor Converse Sneakers. Except maybe 8 pairs of classic cool Chuck Taylor’s.
I love photographing great wedding details. All these little details make your wedding unique and charming and 100% you! The more you go out of your way to make your wedding day original, the better your photos will be. The story is in the details.
Be creative and have a blast!
A Memorable Toast
Wedding day toasts range from the classic, “May you both live as long as you want, and never want as long as you live” to the more humorous, “I’ve known the bride her entire life…” (father of the bride).
Trying to capture the swirling emotions during a toast can be quite a challenge. A memorable image of the toast is much more than the Maid of Honor holding a microphone. How do you tell the story? Personally, I love getting an image with the subject’s thoughts on paper. Handwritten and thoughtful. Few are the people who can stand in front of a crowd and pull beautiful, funny, heartfelt words out of thin air. The attention to little details all help tell the story of your day and why you should never trust your memories to anyone but a professional photographer.

Something Blue
When the priest said “what this couple shares is the ability to make each other laugh” I should have known. 5 minutes before leaving the wedding, I decided to pull them aside for something artistic against a blue wall I scouted earlier. The light was just right and in my minds eye, I saw this amazingly romantic moment between newlyweds.
Within 3 seconds, they were both laughing uncontrollably. It simply wasn’t who they were together. Capturing the story of a couple on their wedding day means being authentic. Leaving behind your ideas of what it’s supposed to look like and immersing yourself into the gloriously wonderful and chaotic roller coaster ride that is a wedding day. Real, honest and simple.
Your life as art. Good times. Honest and real.
Recipe for Love
As Harry Connick Jr. sings— “A little bit of me and a whole lot of you…”
Gather around your closest friends, throw in a wedding celebration, a few drinks, a great band in an even better location and let the love flow. Everyone has their variation of this recipe, but it’s always from the heart and something you’ll always treasure.
Professional wedding photography is art, with you in it. A recipe for fun and memories you’ll want to share with your friends over and over again.
If you’re looking, I’m booking! You bring the fun and I’ll bring the camera!
Catch the Sun
I’ll catch the sun and never give it back again.
I’ll catch the sun.
And keep it for my own.
And in a world where no one understands,
I’ll take my outstretched hand,
And offer it to anyone,
Who comes along and tells me
He’s in need of love.
In need of hope, or maybe just a friend.
Perhaps in time I’ll even share my sun,
With that new anyone,
To whom I gave my hand.

Little Black Book
Perhaps it’s simply because my father was a minister that I have this fascination with the little black book. I know how they get carried around in coat pockets, how eventually the hand written scribbles take over the typed pages.
They say there is an energy to the hand—of blood, truth and knowledge that goes deeper than skin. Thus my fascination with hand written vows, little black books with handwritten notes. You get the picture. And if not, I’ll get the picture and show it to you!
It’s these little details and nuances that make up the tapestry of images that will tell your wedding day story. Your life as art.
Come On In… the Water’s Fine!
Was the water cold? Yes, it would take your breath away. But that did not stop Leianna from putting on her dress the day after her wedding and running through the woods to jump into the icy water.
Trash the Dress sessions are what we call them. It seems to polarize most brides. Most are horrified to think of getting a spot on their wedding dresses, then there are a rare few like Leianna. In her own words, “Why not?” One of the first female snowcat drivers in the world at Mt. Hood, where she met her husband, she lives her life to the fullest— on her terms. Embracing the spirit of fun, she even inspired me to walk into the frigid waters.
Why trust this once-in-a-lifetime moment to anyone but a professional? Your life as art. Inspired photography by Randy Kepple Photographs.
End of the Night
After all the planning, standing, reception lines, dancing and romancing—nothing feels better than kicking off your heels and sitting down in the grass in the cool evening air to enjoy a breath of fresh air and champagne on your wedding night.
By the way, the Aerie at Eagles Landing is a great place for a wedding. Wonderful staff, great food and beautiful location.

Not a Dry Eye in the House
The greatest story to witness is the story of love. When the tears start flowing, you know it’s a good story.
I’m always happen if I can capture a glimpse of the emotion at a wedding. Being able to capture both moms crying was truly a priceless moment.

Setting the Stage
Taking my cue from cinema, I am always looking for ways to tell a story with images. Foreground and background elements all coming together to set the stage for the events that are about to take place.
Much like capturing all the little details throughout the day, it’s important to capture a sense of the place my couples have selected for the most important story of their lives. Mt. Hood Organic Farms is nestled up against Mt. Hood. The backdrop is spectacular and the farm itself looks as if it were lifted off the pages of a Martha Stewart magazine.
Telling your story, one image at a time.
Sweet and Simple—Maui, Hawaii
Stephanie and Josh are patiently waiting to see their wedding photos from Maui, Hawaii. This one stands out as the embodiment of who they are together. Sweet and simple. Love.
A bride recently asked what my favorite type of wedding was to photograph. Easy. Destination weddings. Why? Because they are usually free of the large crowds of people and all the ritualistic things people do at weddings that they have no clue why they are doing. The focus is on enjoying and being in the moment. Intimate, casual, emotional— something you know will be remembered the rest of your life.
Pick a destination and let’s go! If you’re looking, I’m booking!
Through the Looking Glass
This moment is over 15 years old now. I’m sure that all these girls are now young women, starting college. I keep it around because it makes me realize how important my job is in capturing moments that are authentic and honest.
You always hear people say “it’s all about the bride”. I think it’s simply because even as little girls, there is something special and unique about women. Just look at these girls. There is so much in this image that transcends the picture itself. When they see this, I hope it’s like peeking through the looking glass of time.

Located on the Southside of Maui, Makena Beach is a signature, white sand beach. This past week at sunrise, Stephanie and Josh were married in a very intimate ceremony witnessed by family.

Cloudy with a Chance of Love
Let’s face it. We get a lot of rain in the Northwest. That’s why our brides love umbrellas. It’s one of the most requested photos. Be it white umbrellas on a sunny day or black umbrellas on a rainy day. It’s a classic.

An Uncommon Collaboration of Photographers
As individuals, we are artists and studios practicing alone. But together, we are colleagues and supporters of one another’s craft.
If you’ve never read through the “About Us”, then you’re missing what this amazingly talented group of photographers is all about. This past weekend, I accompanied Kate Kelly for her wedding adventure. 4 challenging locations with changing lighting conditions and a passion for weddings.
Uncommon? Yes! That is what separates us from the rest. Consistency and passion coupled with supportive colleagues willing to step up and lend a hand. We had a blast and Kate was as vibrant as her red hair. Talk about grace under pressure!

Making Everybody Happy
Easily the hardest thing to manage at any wedding is time. Trying to find the perfect balance between celebrating with friends and family and a quiet moment with your best friend whom you just married.
Alison and Nathan were married this past weekend at the Portland LDS Temple with a beautiful backyard reception at a private residence in Vancouver. They graciously embraced each guest and got swept away in the celebration of the day. These two images are a moment of in-between time. A brief moment to catch their breath.
A professional photographer understands this and not only rolls with it, but keeps the focus on what matters most. If you’re looking, we’re booking!
What Will You Remember?
You hear it from every couple. The entire day was a blur—I don’t remember anything! So, at the end of the day, what will you remember?
The wedding was winding down and I was literally rolling my camera bag down the hallway when I spotted the bride and groom enjoying a quiet moment away from the chaos and noise of the party. I quickly grabbed my camera and captured this authentic moment. Easily my favorite moment from that wedding day. And one they will always remember.
Hiring a professional is about much more than just good exposures and composition. It’s about capturing the real moments of your wedding day. Moments that go beyond the posed or asked for photos.
