Family Portraits at the Wedding
Everybody tries to look their best at a wedding, especially the family of the Bride and Groom. And weddings are usually held at such beautiful locations, such as this one, at McMenamin’s Edgefield. This is one reason I look for every opportunity I can to create beautiful portraits of family and friends at a wedding. It’s a special day, and a portrait is a special reminder of a wonderful memory.

Married at the EcoTrust Building
Phil and Carla’s friends and family came together atop the EcoTrust Building, in Portland’s Pearl District, to celebrate their marriage–and celebrate they did. It was a beautiful day for a wedding. And it was my birthday. If you have to work on your birthday, you can’t beat taking beautiful photographs of beautiful people. (And I came away with two bottles of wine as a birthday present, compliments of the groom’s mother.)

Lovely Ladies
I have to say, I’ve never photographed a family with so many beautiful daughters, but that was the case with Carla’s family. Must be something in the California water. I had a great time photographing her wedding party, across from downtown Portland.

First Congregational Church Ceremony
Kenzie and Kyle were married at the historic First Congregational Church in downtown Portland. The church has a beautiful old sanctuary with lots of stained glass and colorful light. Just right for a large wedding.

A Little Help From My Friends
We all need a little help from our friends, especially when it comes to keeping our teeth clean for wedding photographs. (You can see another hilarious photo of a groom flossing his bride’s teeth on our blog.)

Father of the Bride
I love photographing the dancing portion of weddings. Especially when the family is as fun and goofy as this one.

Morning Dove and Kellen
Morning Dove. Isn’t that a beautiful name? It’s the name of this beautiful bride, with the tattoo of her namesake. Her sister’s name is Raven. And her husband’s is Kellen. An absolutely beautiful summer day at McMenamin’s Edgefield with a fun bunch of people with cool names.

Bridal Portraits at the Marshall House
Sometimes small and simple makes for beautiful results. Rachael and Jonathan’s wedding, at the Marshall House in Vancouver, Washington, sure proved this to be true. As a wedding photographer, the evening was ideal: beautiful location, beautiful light, and beautiful people. The results: one of the most beautiful sets of portraits I’ve probably ever created at a wedding. With hair and makeup work by AJ’s Hair and Makeup Design, people were ready for photos!

Danielle and Daniel at Dusk
When Danielle came in for a consultation about her wedding photography, and told me she was going to hold her wedding at dusk lit only by candles, I just about leapt out of my seat and begged her to let me photograph it. It turns out I didn’t have to beg her, because she was already sold on working with us. But having received negative reactions from other photographers about the candle-lit ceremony idea, she was pretty happy about my enthusiasm.

The Resort at the Mountain
The Resort at the Mountain, in Welches, Oregon, on Mt Hood, is a beautiful place. Its 27-hole golf course wends its way through fir trees and around lakes; they have a new spa; tons of beautiful condos and rooms; banquet halls; and much, much more.
This didn’t start out as an advertisement for The Resort, but it’s starting to sound like one. My point is: it’s a beautiful place for a wedding. Allison and Jared chose well. And they did a fabulous job in arranging and decorating their spaces, from the ceremony on the bluff, to the reception in the ballroom. Beautiful.
The weather decided to be moody, and we weren’t sure if it would continue to rain or clear up. It didn’t exactly clear up, but it did stop raining, and I used the moody sky to add some oomph to their portraits.

Again and Again
Again and again, however we know the landscape of love
and the little churchyard there, with its sorrowing names,
and the frighteningly silent abyss into which the others
fall: again and again the two of us walk out together
under the ancient trees, lie down again and again
among the flowers, face to face with the sky.
~Rainer Maria Rilke

Nothing Like the Sun
My mistress’ eyes are nothing like the sun;
Coral is far more red than her lips’ red;
If snow be white, why then her breasts are dun;
If hairs be wires, black wires grow on her head.
I have seen roses damasked, red and white,
But no such roses see I in her cheeks,
And in some perfumes is there more delight
Than in the breath that from my mistress reeks.
I love to hear her speak, yet well I know,
That music hath a far more pleasing sound.
I grant I never saw a goddess go;
My mistress when she walks treads on the ground.
And yet, by heaven, I think my love as rare
As any she belied with false compare.
~William Shakespeare, Sonnet 130

The Half Million Dollar Car, with a Kiss
A $500,000 car. It’s true. The owner of this fabulous car is a car collector/builder, and a friend of the bride’s father. He was kind enough to transport the bride and groom from the wedding site, to the reception, held at the Aerie at Eagle Landing!
Photographed in the fading fall sunset, it’s a treasure.

Christi and Vicente at University of Portland
Any time you can get married at a University, I say, do it. Rare is the university campus that is not picture-perfect— manicured grounds, historic buildings, grand vistas. Beautiful places for beautiful weddings.
Christi and Vicente were married at the University of Portland in the fall. We had a lovely hour wandering the campus, creating stunning portraits of them, including this panoramic photograph I created for them.

Danielle and her Grandfather’s Truck
Danielle–the graphic designer–put plenty of thought into everything for her wedding. Including the choice of her grandparents’ Damascus farm as the site, replete with old trucks and tractors that made excellent portrait props. Very thoughtful of her; it was like a photographer’s playground. The texture of her dress, veil, and the surrounding farm–trucks and tractors included–were a real delight to photograph.

Walking into the Sunset
Once upon a time, on a stormy fall day in the Columbia River Gorge, two beautiful people, madly in love, decided to get married.
I was there. When the sun broke through the clouds, it was stunning.

Morning Dove is Her Name
Morning Dove. Isn’t that a beautiful name? It’s the name of this beautiful bride. Her sister’s name is Raven. And her husband’s is Kellen. An absolutely beautiful summer day at McMenamin’s Edgefield with a fun bunch of people with cool names.
Morning Dove works at the exclusive Multnomah Athletic Club’s Salon. She and her beautiful coworkers did a gorgeous job of creating one of the most stunning hair and makeup arrangements I’ve seen on a bride. A 1940’s retro look, complete with short veil, woven vines, and exotic flowers. Add a lovely off-white dress, and you have quite the fashion. I was only disappointed that I didn’t have even more time to photograph her and Kellen….

Sanctuary
Last year I had the privilege of photographing the Johnston family at their daughter Stephanie’s wedding, at Youngberg Hill Vineyard and Inn. Stephanie has 2 sisters, Kenzie and Megan. So this summer I was able to photograph the wedding of Kenzie, and next summer, it’ll be Megan’s turn! Good thing I like their family so much; they’re a lot of fun to work with. And they have good taste.
Kenzie and Kyle were married at the historic First Congregational Church in downtown Portland, an old sanctuary with lots of stained glass and colorful light. Beautiful.
